"Bottling up past trauma can lead to inadequate coping strategies in later life."
How many times has he heard those words? How much of his life has been spent in therapy? Just what happened to him in the past that’s he’s bottled up, that was so awful, that messed him up so much? Was it just that he fell into drugs and couldn’t find a way out? Or was there a reason he fell into drugs? Did something terrible happen to him, something he could never bring himself to tell anyone about? Or was it just poor decision-making? Or was it the other way around: getting himself trapped in addiction, and having something horrible happen to him in part because of that? What was his trauma? What has he been holding in all these years? What has been eating him up inside, poisoning him, so that he can’t cope with the life he has now and has to hide in the life he had before? Before the dreadful thing that broke him.
The way the words flow out of him, recited so easily, makes me think that he’s heard them countless times, from dozens of different doctors. This last stint in rehab isn’t the first time he’s tried to get help.
And then they way he catches himself - the pause, the quick glance to the side as he thinks fuck, I’ve given away too much. He’s a mess inside, all safety pins and string, and he’s so scared of his friends seeing that, seeing him. Because he used to be unstoppable, he used to be the King, and now? Now he’s damaged goods; a broken teacup, good for nothing.
Well, how did you get in?
Those last two gifs. Ed shoving David out of the way, like he doesn’t even notice he’s there. Like he only has eyes for Shaun. Like he’s so happy that Shaun’s back, that Shaun survived, that nothing else matters. Tunnel vision. For a while, there, Ed had thought that Shaun was gone forever. It’d seemed like Shaun was never coming back. And Ed would’ve felt so guilty for that, because it was his phone going off that had alerted the zombies, and it was his answering the phone that had caused Shaun to so royally lose his temper. And what if that was it? What if the last conversation they’d ever had was that argument?
But then there Shaun was, perfectly fine, fucking alive, and Ed’s overjoyed. There’s nothing but Shaun in this moment. Shaun standing there all proud of himself for saving them. Shaun, Ed’s best friend in the entire world, who’d always stuck by him and stuck up for him. Shaun, the one constant in Ed’s life, the one person who really matters. Shaun, who’d just risked his life to save the rest of them. And when Shaun smiles at Ed, calls him babe in that way he does when he’s in a good mood, Ed knows he’s forgiven, and he can’t stop smiling, because Shaun’s here with him, Shaun’s alive, and everything’s okay again.
this made my day
